Eh, temprature barely raised here... wasn't any flaming by any means... and no, I'm not suggesting we start, either. S'okay to debate points... that's why we're here to begin with. Just doesn't hurt every so often to remind people that reading posts are -not- the same as speaking to a person face to face. A -lot- can get lost in the translation. Case in point, people who know me know I have something of a dry, sarcastic humour... which they tend to realise is humour in person... but when I write online, that sarcasm doesn't come out as well, and most people interpret it as my just being mean. Even the things that weren't meant to be sarcastic to begin with!
Moral here: read everything with a grain of salt, and don't take anything personally. Otherwise, you're going to end up like this guy:

| This is not to say that you can't sing a showtune, but if your entire repertoire is Linda Eder, you're gonna need to accept that it's time to put a new CD in your car because as much as you like singing those songs, the bar needs to stay in business for you to have decent karaoke to go to and it's not good when not a single song is recognizable or sing-along-able or at the very LEAST, danceable, causing the crowd to again, leave in droves. |
Breathe, hon. Breathe. That was one heck of a mouthful there.
And yeah, I mostly agree here... but occasionally, you'll be surprised at who know what song. Granted, you pulled out a very specific example in Linder Eder... but just because you don't know a song that's being sung, doesn't mean everyone in the bar ain't going to recognise it.
Let me cite another example for you: Every so often, I'll yank out a song that most people at the Lizard (at least on the nights I go) don't know... in this example, I'm talking "Hippychick" by Soho. I've also done that song elsewhere... and was surprised as all get out to find that people -knew- the song... and appreciated the fact that I sung it.
Now, that's just one example... and I've seen people pull out songs that I've never heard before, and would never hear if not for the fact that they've just sung it at karaoke. There are songs that I've -only- ever heard at karaoke (some of which, I hear are quite popular... but because I haven't turned on a radio since getting my iPod, I wouldn't be in the business of hearing).
My point here is this: I get that people want to hear the popular stuff... but not everyone is there to listen to it... and certainly not everyone singing is there to just sing the popular stuff. If -all- you're going to sing is Frank Sinatra, then so be it. So long as you're not the -only- singer that night, and it's at least broken up between other songs, that's fine.
There may even be times where the -crowd- finds that acceptable... but a handful of people don't. Like us, this past Sunday. We were the minorty who wanted more up-tempo songs... but it seems the geriatric crowd who was there, wanted to hear more music from their era. Did we still sing what we wanted to? Yep. Did they manage to chase us away? Nope. Might have been a moment when we all collectively nodded off, but we woke up when it was our turn to sing
Oh, and as for the 8 minute songs... I always those the KJ's appreciated them, too... for those very reasons that our esteemed Admin cited. Of course, if -everyone- is going to do them, there might be a problem... especially on those busy nights... but truth told, I'd rather hear a long song over a short song, and then DJ music for the next 4 minutes while the KJ gets his/herself together. I'm here for karaoke, not canned music. At least if I'm listening to someone else sing, I'm not feeling like I'm waiting longer and getting gyped because canned music is playing (tho, technically, I know I'm not being gypped, since it's not like I'm -paying- to sing, either... but y'all know what I mean, right?)
Put that 14 cents on my tab... and then add whatever this post added to it, neh?

I just added a post to the Favorite Danceable songs thread. In it I asked people to please come down on Tuesday nights - it's a little slow - we need more singers to pep us up! DJ Steve is in the booth these days, too, and like I said... while I'm sure the ham in each of us is thrilled to get to sing so much, we both appreciate happy singers.
And not to be a snot, but please remember: No Drink-y - No Sing-y.
So come visit me and Steve on Tuesday. Ask anyone. We don't bite (unless you ask very nicely). _________________ Come see me, Michele - the Lizard Lounge's Singing Bartender - every Tuesday night! |

I dont think that Autechre is particularly hard to get into, but for stuff in the same vein, depending on the Autrechre era, the dubstep musician Boxcutter may be to your liking. Check out the Tauhid record.

Heh, I used to try to play those songs out of guitar songbooks. Satriani was one of those 80s/90s guitar gods who only guitar players knew about, it seemed.
For some reason I enjoy working out with a mix of intense music and mellow, laid back music. Its funny to me to hear Norah Jones while Im trying to be intense, but Im weird that way.
